won't instal because the Canon registration system doesn't respond.

It is possible to install (hint FAX)

>Better hint please

at the start of the install there is an ini file in a temp directory that has a line controlling whether or not you get the opportunity to register by fax. Edit, save and proceed with entering details.

How to install Canon Mediator

Canon Mediator won't install properly because it requires registration via the Internet, which is apparently not available anymore. To install Mediator do the following:

1. Run the installation program.

2. Notice where temporary files are copied to (probably C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\Temp\)

3. Alt + TAB out of the installation program

4. Press "Start" -> "Run..." and type the path mentioned above (the temporary folder)

5. Open the folder "setup.tmp".

6. Find a file called "cmi.ini".

7. Open this file in Notepad and find the line:

Fax/MailEreg=NO

8. Change that line to:

Fax/MailEreg=YES

9. Save the "cmi.ini" file.

10. Now ALT + TAB back into the running installer. Procede with registration and choose the Fax option.

11. You will be prompted to print out registration form. Just hit Cancel in the print dialog.

12. "Registration" complete. Now install the software! Done!

Also, I've noticed that the free UniExtractor program will extract the install file if you use the "Wise Installer /X switch" option, although the correct directory structure apparently isn't preserved.
